WEST FARMS MARKET HOUSING

The West Farms Market Housing is located in the South Bronx close to Hunts Point which has a cultural significance of being one of the major food packaging and production hubs in the New York City metropolitan area. The site is located along the Sheridan highway, a major infrastructure that runs parallel to the Bronx River.

The housing project speculates a condition where the Sheridan Highway is eliminated and instead redeveloped as a park. The housing complex then attaches itself to the park as a reconnecting element between the neighborhood and the river.

The project is raised to allow maximum public access where the whole open space is designated for recreational activities and for potential space for farmers market to take place. This ultimately aims to integrate the fading food culture in the area within the housing complex through rooftop farms and locally marketing the products. The complex is composed of 3 typological units for various family types. Each unit has a dedicated roof or terrace deck.

All the units are connected through a private circulation which is separate from the public access on the street and roof levels. In addition to the open market area, the ground level has a commercial overlay for restaurants, cafeterias and other public amenities.
