CANKAYA COMMUNITY HOUSE

Located in the Cankaya county of Ankara, this is a renovation project of an abandoned structure to be converted into a district community house for elderly people.

The master planning takes advantage of the hilly landscape and creates a series of platforms of various exterior gathering points. As the building is partially leveled with the surrounding landscape, a portion of the roof is extended into the park area and is proposed as a roof garden where the residents can grow various plants and vegetables for their own use.

The interior space is composed of several socializing and lounging spaces. The major element in the interior space is a screened wall unit that separates the public spaces from the core area which hosts bathrooms and a doctors office. A floating staircase that is attached to this wall unit leads up to the second floor where the screened wall ends partway as desk spaces for computer stations. The second floor majorly consists of a study room and a library. A coffered drop ceiling is proposed in order to provide acoustical buffer for the study area.

The space overall serves as a community center that is open to public where an existing building is revived in order to engage it’s surrounding landscape and it’s history. The selected program hopes to serve as a public incubator to reconnect the growing population with the younger generation and the society through public service.
