BIG IDEAS FOR SMALL LOTS COMPETITION
This is a competition entry for the Big Ideas For Small Lots (BIFSL) organized by NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development. The competition calls for design proposals in regards to NYC’s ever increasing dire need for affordable housing units.
A selection of underutilized lots are given - which are legally too narrow to develop - for an opportunity to test and create housing developments with full compliance to NYC building codes, zoning and a strict budget for construction so that the units fall into an affordable housing bracket.
This proposal develops a modular design scheme which can be configured as needed to adapt 4 selected underutilized lots with different typologies:
2 x Narrow attached interior lots with traditional townhouse typology
1 x Corner lot with full accessible units
1x Detached single family home.
The proposal has thoroughly considered the NYC zoning regulations, structural possibilities and facade details options in order to achieve a cost effective, replicable building type that can last a long time.
